John Altman - composer, arranger, songwriter

Patron and regular supporter of our fund raising events, John Altman Lives locally to the National Jazz Archive, but is know across the globe for his world-class and award winning musical prowess as a composer, producer, orchestrator and performer.

He has won: BAFTAs and EMMYs; the Gold Badge of Excellence for services to British music, awarded by his peers in The British Academy of Songwriters & Composers (now known as The Ivor's); a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Monaco Film Festival; and an honorary Doctorate of Music from the University of Sussex, where he was the first ever Creative Arts Fellow in the Department of Humanities.

John has numerous film and TV credits and has performed with well known artists including Eric Clapton, Zoot Money, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page and the late Amy Winehouse. He was Van Morrison's Musical Director for many years and Hot Chocolate's Musical Director and saxophone player. As an arranger, John Altman has also been responsible for popular classics such as Alison Moyet's 'That Old Devil Called Love', George Michael's 'Kissing A Fool', and Bjork's 'It's Oh So Quiet'.

If not working with some of today's the greats, John is a featured sax player in leading jazz clubs and festivals round the world and regularly records albums with his own jazz quartet and his highly acclaimed and hugely influential Big Band.
