  • Description
  • 'The Potted History of Jazz' was written by Rex Harris, and in many respects, condenses his book entitled 'Jazz' written for Penguin Books in 1952. His history begins in 1619 with African slaves transported to America in a Dutch man-o'-war, travels through New Orleans jazz and concludes with Count Basie. Key Signatures annotate marked musical instrumental numbers in the script and presumably, Webb provided the music. Harris was a writer, broadcaster, journalist and lecturer on the subject of jazz, but was an optician by profession. The script was written for Ray Sonin [23 June 1907-20 August 1999] who was an English-born broadcaster. Sonin's radio programmes both in the UK and Canada featured British popular music.
