  • Description
  • Very personal letter. Hawkins picked up some records from 'Smith's music shop here' - one by The Boswell's [sic] but he's 'forgotten the title at the moment'' Ellington's 'Ebony Rhapsody', and one by the Casa Loma orchestra who are 'incidentally, my favourite band'. Hawkins thinks that 'They are really more active here in Holland than in Paris'. He's going to make a private disc just for Renee - he thinks it will be 'the best record I ever made'. He thinks 'it's really quite a change from Paris, but i rather tlike it here with its peaceful ways. There's more life here than in London at that.' He read the Melody Maker write up of (Jack) Hylton's show in Paris and it was 'almost authentic' Hawkins thinks that hylton 'didn't raise and trouble in Paris at all.' In fact he 'Got razzed several times at the Gaumont Palace, trying to play 'Chinatown' and 'St. Louis Blues'. Melody Maker also said the '"Three Gaylords"' were the highspot but Hawkins thinks 'they didn't do s - t' [sic]. He feels 'That paper should stop lieing [sic] to the public.' Hawkins has been in the Hague for five days and has seven more - and then back to Paris. Paris is a city that 'will make you spend all your money'.,,
