  • Description
  • Letter headed 'A Viper's Moan'. Extremely affectionate, requesting a full length photograph in 'one of those clinging dresses'. It's not Hawkins' love for the parties in Europe which is keeping him from returning to 'the states' but his love for Renee - but he's ready to return 'the moment you are mine and with me forever'. 'Hawkins is preparing for a concert at the Tivoli Concert Hall - 'everyone expects it to be quite a success'. He hasn't yet received his photographs from Paris. He's been asked to go to Paris to play with the Willie Lewis Orchestra - if he can't come they'll send for Bennie [sic] Carter. Hawkins replied that he wouldn't come at the moment but he doesn't know if they contacted Carter. Hawkins likes the 'idea of the Hawkins-carter unit' and 'would love to have that old band of Fletcher's (?Henderson). Hawkins wonders how the Mills Brothers and the 'Washboard combination' got permits (work permits?) for England as he understood that 'they were not giving Americans any more permits' - or 'does that account just include musicians and not singers'. Hawkins guesses that 'it's still the same as ever with that certain amount of pull'. He'll write to 'Elma' and see if it's possible to get another permit.,,
