  • Description
  • Hawkins thinks Fud Candrix's band is 'quite swell'. Candrix is a 'very good tenor player and also 'gets-off' on the fiddle. Candrix mentioned that Renee was fixing a recording date for his band on Decca. Hawkins is less excited by (Arthur?) Briggs' band - they 'play rather nice Rumbas, but the Fox-Trots really don't send me'. Hawkins hasn't heard anything from Willie Lewis recently. Hawkins doesn't know when he's going to Switzerland - 'I've been enjoying myself so much here'. He hears good reports regarding Switzerland but, 'at the moment Holland isn't bad, yeh!' Hawkins has heard nothing about Louis Armstrong for ages - but it's 'puzzling about him and Alpha'. He comments that the Jimmy Lunceford track 'Rhapsody Junior' was written by Duke Ellington and you can hear that in the recording. He likes the Luceford band very much and they're beginning to be one of his favourites. The Fletcher Henderson tracks 'Wrappin' It Up'' and 'Happy as the Day is Long' are 'not bad at all' - 'it's really too bad this band had to disperse'. He also has Bob Howard's 'The Ghost of Dinah' with Teddy Wilson at the 'box' and he thinks Red Norvo's'With all my Heart and Soul' is a 'solid sender'.,,
